Best haircut for curly hair?

I have long curly hair, it reaches to about the middle of my back, maybe a little shorter. I love it long, because it's not so big and "bam" but it flattens out the top. I'm getting a trim tomorrow, and I was wondering what the best thing to do would be. I was thinking of getting a few inches off instead of just a trim, but I don't want it just straigh across. I've gotten layers before, and it just made my hair look huge. Would getting it angled look alright? Or should I stick with just getting a few inches straight off? My sister suggested getting my hair trimmed with hair thinners, and then get it layered, but I'm scared it will ruin my curls. I don't love them, because they're hard to take care of, but my hair kind of "goes" with me. I don't want to ruin it by getting it thinned. Any ideas?

I hear you...I too have curly hair...i once made a mistake by telling the hairdresser to take an inch and a half off and long layers and thinned out...i got too much done so i ended up with some short a** hair which i truly regretted...you should just get long layers...long layers helps out curly hair...
